Bio:
Phil Strong is an award winning sound designer and composer based in Toronto. In 1990 he was awarded a scholarship from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to study Sound & Music Recording at the Banff Centre of the Arts. In this environment he gained practical experience supporting other artists while also experimenting with recording and production techniques and developing audio compositions for film and multi-media. At the Banff Centre Phil had the opportunity to work with a diverse and accomplished cast of artists and it is here that the first of many plunderphonic audio projects with John Oswald was undertaken. In 1993 Phil moved back to Toronto to produce film and dance soundtracks. During this time, he met and worked with Laurel MacDonald and together they produced her critically acclaimed debut album, Kiss Closed My Eyes. In 1996 Les Grands Ballets Canadiens created and performed choreographies for each of the tracks on this CD including PhilÕs plunderphonic composition, Aslumber. Phil has received numerous commissions for feature dance pieces and since 1999, he has been the principal sound composer for Christopher House and Toronto Dance Theatre, collaborating on six major dance productions. In 2000, Strong and Oswald collaborated on a 13.1 surround composition & apparatus for the multiscreen video installation, Stress, by Bruce Mau. This piece debuted at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) and continues to be exhibited internationally. In 2003, his collaboration with Laurel MacDonald to compose music for Moze Mossanen's film, Year Of The Lion, earned a Gemini Award for Best Original Musical Score. The following year, Phil generated a combined sound design and musical score for Ali Kazimi's film, Continuous Journey, which was awarded the Golden Sheaf award at the Yorkton Film Festival for "best original music" and two Gemini nominations; one for "best music" and another for "best sound". Phil has produced albums for other recording artists and has contributed to several collections of sound & music as well as releasing soundtracks from his film scores and dance productions. Lusciana's Lullaby, produced for Laurel MacDonald, became Echoes Radio's "Best album of 2005". Mary Jane Lamond's latest album, Storas, earned an ECMA for "best solo album" (2006). Phil instructs the Film Sound & Music course at the Audio Recording Academy (Toronto) and is known to perform on the T.O.O.B. - an electro-acoustic instrument of his own design. |
